President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed the appointment of four new Supreme Court Judges.
This was disclosed in a statement by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad who named the judges as Hon. Justice Tijjani Abubakar (North-East Zone), Hon. Justice Mohammed L. Garba (North-West Zone), Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki (North-West Zone), Hon. Justice Mohammed M. Saulawa.
All the judges appointed are from the Northern Nigeria.
The president also approved the appointment of three heads of court, 11 judges for state high courts and four Kadis of Sharia Court of Appeal.
Despite the decline in the number of Justices, Buhari had refused to send the names of four justices of the Court of Appeal comprising Justices Adamu Jauro, Emmanuel Agim, Sam Oseji, and Helen Ogunwumiju, to the Supreme Court for confirmation after their nomination in October 2019 by the National Juducial Council.
Justice Miohammed Garba, one of the appointed judges, was head of the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal which upheld the election of President Buhari.
The confirmation of the four new judges will add to the strength of the apex court which currently has 12 Justices on its bench.
