Former EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde Passes Away at 61

Cairo, Egypt — Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has died at the age of 61. Mr. Lamorde passed away in Egypt, where he had traveled for medical treatment, according to a close associate who spoke to journalists on Sunday morning.

Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Ibrahim Lamorde had a distinguished career in law enforcement. He attended Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984. Following his graduation, he joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986.

Mr. Lamorde’s career in the Nigerian Police Force spanned over three decades. He retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. Throughout his service, he was recognized for his dedication and contribution to various departments, culminating in his leadership roles within the EFCC.

The EFCC, established in 2003, saw Mr. Lamorde as one of its pioneering members. He was appointed as the pioneer Director of Operations, setting the foundation for the commission’s activities against economic and financial crimes. In December 2007, he stepped in as Acting Chairman and held the position until June 2008, when Farida Waziri was appointed Chairperson.

On November 3, 2011, Mr. Lamorde was appointed Acting Chairman of the EFCC following the removal of Farida Waziri by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. His appointment was confirmed by the Senate on February 15, 2012, making him the third substantive Chairman of the Commission. He held this position until November 9, 2015, when President Muhammadu Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu as the Acting Chairman of the EFCC.

During his tenure, Mr. Lamorde was known for his relentless efforts in fighting corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria. His leadership saw numerous high-profile investigations and prosecutions, reinforcing the EFCC’s role in Nigeria’s anti-graft initiatives.

His career was marked by several notable achievements and challenges. As a key figure in Nigeria’s law enforcement, he left a legacy of dedication to public service and the fight against corruption.
