Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Osun State governorship election has been declared winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Returning Officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, declared Adeleke as the winner of the poll having garnered a total of 403,371 votes to beat the incumbent, Adegboyega who contested under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
According to INEC, Oyetola finished second in the poll with a total of 375,027 votes.
Ogundipe announced, “I declare Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen, on behalf of the chairman of INEC, of the PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.”
The PDP candidate secures the most votes cast in 17 out of 30 Local Government Areas of the State, while the ruling APC candidate clinched 13 LGAs.
Among the LGAs won by the PDP are; Ede North, Ede South, Ifelodun, Boluwaduro, Egbedore, Odo Otin, Osogbo, Ila, Atakumosa West, Olorunda, Ilesa West, Obokun, Oriade, Orolu, Ife North, Irepodun, and Ejigbo LGAs.
The APC candidate won in the following LGAs; Boripe, Ilesa East, Ayedire, Ifedayo, Ife Central, Ayedaade, Iwo, Olaoluwa, Isokan, Atakumosa East, Irewole, Ife South, and Ife East LGAs.
The victory comes after Adeleke had lost to Oyetola in the 2018 election. Although Adeleke won the main election, INEC declared it inconclusive as the total number of invalid votes was more than the margin between the two leading political parties. Oyetola won the rerun election amid allegations of voter inducement by the PDP.
Senator Adeleke is the uncle of popular Nigerian musician, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
