The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that about 30 percent of citizens are illiterates.
This was disclosed by Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, on Wednesday in Lagos, NAN reports.
The Minister stated this when he spoke to the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria, EWAN, 2022 Summit themed, ‘Toward Safe Schools in Nigeria’.
Adamu was represented by Vivian Wategre, Director of Education Service in the ministry.
According to him, policies and actions aimed toward safe schools show the Federal government’s commitment to Nigeria’s present and future times.
Adamu stated that 2021 data show that at least 31 percent of Nigerians were illiterates, marking a reduction from the 38 percent recorded in 2015.
The Minister noted that the ministry remains committed to improving the country’s literacy level.
He said part of the means to improve the situation includes collaborating with the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Global Education.

Adamu recalled that some Nigerian business leaders had in May 2014 launched the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI) during the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEFA) in Abuja.
The initiative prompted the Safe Schools Fund launch, with capitalization from the Federal Government, the private sector, and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The National Council on Education approved the National Policy of Safety and Violence-Free Schools in August 2021.
The Safe School Declaration (SSD) Laws and Policies was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for implementation.
