A Tribute to My Namesake – Senator John Sidney McCain III.

“Who is that?” He asked with feigned shock etched vividly on his face. “That White Man over there!” she said pointing at me. I looked up from my desk to find one finger and about 10 pairs of astounded eyes in my direction. I chuckled, especially at the reference to me as ‘that white man’. Anybody who knows me knows that the only white things about my appearance are my teeth and eyes, the others are ‘very African’. Lol . . . It turns out that the lady who had referred to me as a white man did so because of my support for Sen McCain during the US presidential campaign in 2008 between Barack Obama and John McCain. My support for the American senator was so strong that it earned me the nickname ‘McCain’ in Airtel Nigeria at the time (especially amongst my fellow staff bus mates), so m...

World: Nigeria’s President, Facing Calls to Step Aside, Says He Will Run Again

Despite calls to step aside and concerns about mysterious health problems, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria on Monday declared his intention to seek re-election next year, ending months of speculation. In a closed-door meeting of the National Executive Committee, after national news outlets had left the room, Mr. Buhari, 75, announced that he would run again, according to people who were present and briefed reporters afterward. They said he had told the committee that he was responding to popular demand that he seek another term. Mr. Buhari has faced widespread criticism over his government’s inability to defeat the renewed Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, or to end violence between herders and farming communities. Last year, he spent nearly four months in Britain receivi...

Nigeria: Why I Spoke Directly to Nigerian Leaders – Bill Gates

The Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, again on Monday criticised the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. Gates, in an interview with the CNN, said that the Federal Government’s investment in education and health was not good enough. “While it may be easier to be polite, it’s more important to face facts so that you can make progress,” the philanthropist told a room of Nigeria’s government elite that included the President. In an exclusive television interview with the CNN, Gates said he spoke out to implore Nigerian politicians to focus on human capital and its large youth population. “The current quality and quantity of investment in this young generation in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,...

World: Is America Any Safer 15 Years After September 9/11?

Fifteen years ago this September 11, 19 terrorists, using four jetliners as guided missiles, killed 2,977 people—and enveloped the country in fear. It was the first sustained attack on American soil since the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which was a far-off military base. This massacre hit the center of our government and blasted away part of our most iconic skyline. It left a stench that New Yorkers could smell weeks later as remains continued to be recovered from the ashes. Suddenly, we were vulnerable. Not just to disease, tornadoes, accidents, or criminals, but to the kinds of enemies that had always threatened others but never us. Barack Obama remembers that after the second plane hit, he left the Chicago building that housed his state-Senate office. “I stood in the street and looke...
