U.S Gives Conditions for Lifting Sanctions Imposed on South Sudan

The United States has asked South Sudan to intensify its efforts at achieving sustainable peace and kicking out corruption if arms embargo and other sanctions imposed on the country would be lifted. It was disclosed by outgoing ambassador of the U.S to South Sudan, Thomas Hushek. Hushek was quoted by BBC to have said that South Sudan has to work on a “reduction in level of violence and corruption” in the system for the sanctions to be lifted. Arms embargo on South Sudan was extended in May by the United Nations Security Council for a duration of one year to block the flow of weapons to armed groups in the country. Boko Haram Insurgents Attack UN Helicopter, Scores Killed in Borno

 A united Nations aid helicopter has been attacked by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, Nigeria. UN reports that the insurgents attacked the helicopter on Thursday in Damasak, Borno State, killing civilians, among whom were a five-year-old child. The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon said on Saturday that the casualties and people injured were not on board during the attack. Kallon in a statemen said, “A UN Humanitarian Air Service helicopter was hit by bullets during the attack. No aid workers were on board at the time and crew members are all safe.” UN communique reported that the terrorists shot the helicopter as it made its way towards Damasak and the pilots managed to make a return to Maiduguri, AFP reports. UN appoints Winnie Byanyima as UNAIDS New Executive Director

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has appointed Ms Byanyima as the UNAIDS Executive Director and a United Nations Under-Secretary-General following a comprehensive selection process that involved a search committee constituted by members of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board. The UNAIDS Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations made the final recommendation on the appointment to the Secretary-General. Africa: Kofi Annan Passes On at 80

Koffi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General, has passed on at the age of 80. His death was announced in a tweet from his Twitter account @KofiAnnan. The tweet read "It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness." Kofi Annan passed on in Switzerland and his family has requested that some privacy be accorded them as they mourn the passing of their father and the Nobel Peace Prize winner. They however promised to announce arrangements for his burial later.
