Presidency Reaffirms July Delivery of Six Super Tucano

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to end insurgency in the country. The Presidency said the fight against insecurity will be revved up soon with the expected arrival of six Super Tucano light attack aircraft from the United States (U.S.) mid-July. Already, Nigerian Air Force (NAF) 14 personnel are in  Georgia, U.S. for training on how to deploy the jets. Military needs Superior Weapons to End Insurgency – Ndume

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Ali Ndume, has urged the Federal Government to increase the military budget for buying arms to enable them defeat Boko Haram insurgents. He said if the military budget for personnel and overheads dwarfs the amount spent on arms and ammunition, the military would not be able to defeat the insurgents. The Nigerian Air Force has debunked claims by Boko Haram terrorists that it shot down the missing NAF 476 Alpha Jet, which remains uncounted for after it went off the radar in Borno State. Reacting to Boko Haram’ claim, the NAF on Saturday stated that the jet had an accident for several reasons, which the military was investigating and was not shot down as shown in the video. No Trace of Money or Arms Procured by Ex-Service Chiefs – NSA

National Security Adviser Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) has disclosed that the federal government is not aware of how monies meant for the purchase of arms were spent under the immediate past Service Chiefs. He also stated that government cannot also trace the arms claimed to have been bought. Monguno, who made the disclosures in an interview with Hausa service of the BBC, explained the new Service Chiefs also said they have not seen the arms bought by their predecessors. Gunmen abduct Teachers, Students in Edo

Gunmen on Wednesday night invaded the National Institute of Construction Technology, Uromi, Esan Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State and abducted yet-to-be-ascertained number of teachers and students. According to a report by The Nation, the kidnappers invaded the institute on Wednesday night, amid sporadic gunshots. The development, it was gathered heightened tension in the area, with parents and guardians storming the institute to ascertain the whereabouts of their children and wards. Edo state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bello Kontongs, a Superintendent of Police (SP), confirmed the incident, but said he was awaiting the details from the commander of anti-kidnapping unit of the state’s police command.
