Senate to hold Zonal Hearings on Constitution Review May 26

The Senate has said its planned zonal public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, would hold from May 26 to 27. Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, is the Chairman of the committee which has 59 other Senators drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as members. All female Senators and principal officers except the Senate President, are equally members of the panel. Senate Passes Bill on Compulsory Health Insurance for Every Nigerian  

Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Chairman, Senate Committee on Health has disclosed that the Senate has passed a bill that makes health insurance compulsory for every Nigerian. He stated this on Thursday in Abuja at the inauguration of Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP). He said, “We have passed it in the Senate. Two Committees on health from Senate and the House of Representatives worked on the bill, so the bill is before the House of Representatives just for concurrence. “Also, the National Assembly has passed the National Health Insurance Authority Act. No Plan to Increase VAT – FG

The Federal Government has debunked claims on social media that it plans to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) and other taxes in its proposed Finance Bill. Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, who issued the disclaimer while defending the Ministry’s budget before the Senate Committee on Finance in Abuja, said the report of an imminent increase in VAT and other taxes in the proposed Finance Bill to be presented to the National Assembly was false.
