Suspected Islamists Kill At Least 18 In East Congo Attack

Suspected Islamists killed at least 18 people in a village raid in eastern Congo on Sunday night, local sources said, while fighting resumed with the M23 rebel group in a neighbouring province. Fighters believed to be from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed residents and burned down houses in the village of Otomabere, in Irumu territory, Ituri province, said a witness, a local chief and a local human rights group. Congolese army spokesman Jules Ngongo confirmed the ADF attack without giving a death toll, and said Congolese forces were in pursuit of the assailants. The ADF is a Ugandan militia that moved to eastern Congo in the 1990s. Thousands Abandon Their Homes Amid DR Congo Battles

More than 37,000 people have been forced from their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the last four days of fighting, according to aid agencies. Local media report that the national army has retaken some areas that had been seized by the M23 rebels in recent days. But the main road between Rutshuru and the North Kivu regional capital, Goma, remains blocked by the M23. The DR Congo government has again accused Rwanda of supporting the rebels, which the government in Kigali denies. Rwanda Discloses Plans for School Resumption

The government of Rwanda has said schools will remain shut till comprehensive risk assessment is conducted which will determine period and method of resumption. The decision on school reopening is one among other resolutions reached by the cabinet after a meeting on Friday, August 14 in Kigali. The office of the Prime Minister in a statement said, “Remote learning continues to be encouraged and should be strengthened.” Rwanda announced closure of its schools after recording its index case in the middle of March, with government saying schools might remain shut until September at the earliest, CGTN published. Rwanda on Friday launched a multi-party COVID-19 recovery program known as Cultural and Creative Industry Recovery Plan to uphold enterprises in the cultural and creative industry, as well as artists. Rwanda Seals $150 Million Skills Development Agreement with World Bank

Rwanda and World Bank have agreed a $150 million financing agreement to assist the country accomplish skills development in chosen economic sectors. Rwanda to Carry out Testing Survey of Coronavirus in the Street of Kigali

Rwanda will on Thursday commence a random COVID-19 street testing survey in Kigali and points of entry to ascertain the coronavirus situation in its largest city, a senior health officer revealed on Wednesday. Turkey Gifts Rwanda Face Masks to Help Combat COVID-19

Rwanda’s fight against coronavirus has been boasted by donation of face masks received from Turkey. The ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Rwanda, acknowledged receipt of the donation in a statement describing it as “a sign of friendship and solidarity between the two countries in the fight against COVID-19.” The Turkish embassy in Rwanda said Ankara offered 50,000 face masks while a private firm donated 40,000 to Kigali in show of support to the East African nation.
