Nigeria: The Debate Over Relinquishing Sovereignty by Victor Oladokun

The Nigerian Minister of #Transportation, Rotimi Amechi, has been in the news recently. He says he has only just become aware of a clause in a $5 billion rail project to be built by #China, that requires the  relinquishing of sovereignty in the event of a loan default. With all due respect, this is a red herring. #Nigeria should not and must not relinquish an iota of its sovereignty. There are other ways of financing infrastructure #development, including direct foreign investment, private sector partnerships, bonds, the utilisation of a portion of the country's sovereign wealth fund, and concessionary loans from institutions such as the #AfricanDevelopmentBank This is not about China. Rather, it is about smart investing and the imperative of not discounting Nigeria's development aga...

Opinion: Questions Buhari Should Answer before the Elections

With the current exchanges of verbal batons across political parties, there is no doubt that the 2019 general elections are presenting the nation a lot of melodramatic episodes. While some elite class that are partisan are exchanging verbal missiles and cross fires across various campus social media, the reality is that both Buhari and Atiku’s political ventures have divided us. Some of the divisions are realist, and some are emotionally inclined. However, it is a current reality that even though our ivory towers are non-partisan political blocs, we are most suitably conscious of the complexities and  truths about our Nigerian polity. Therefore, we are in a position to educate the masses. The ASUU strike notwithstanding, many in the academia are still positively hopeful that President B...

Opinion: 2019 Elections and Amina Zakari by Reuben Abati

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised severally in the lead up to the 2019 general elections, that he would ensure a free, fair, transparent and credible process, and defend the right of the people to choose. But the appointment, literally on the eve of the election of a niece of his, Mrs Amina Zakari as the INEC Commissioner in charge of the National Results Collation Centre has placed a big question mark on that declaration. The attempt to deny any form of blood relation or filial connection between the President and the INEC official is grossly unconvincing. It has deepened suspicions, and exposed the incompetence and insensitivity of those who proposed her for that position in the first place. INEC faces an integrity challenge. It must address it. Ms Zakari is however, not n...

Opinion: The Elevation of Incompetence – By Shaka Momodu

There is a struggle going on in Nigeria. It is a struggle between two evils – one, less so with a touch of human face and the other, extremely so – aloof, insensitive, unfeeling, deeply hypocritical and incompetent on a level never before seen in our country. My dilemma is not so much with choosing between the two, but about some people’s warm embrace of the latter. Ordinarily, one would think that the less dangerous of the two would be more attractive to many people. But I have been shocked by some people’s blind craving for danger masked in superlative adjectives of integrity, character, honesty, etc. I must confess that I have been struggling to understand the rationale and motive of some of these people for their willful blind support for a man whose legendary lack of competence and...

Nigeria: APC Presents Buhari As Sole Presidential Candidate

The All Progressives Congress has officially presented President Buhari as its sole candidate for the Presidential elections of 2019. Making this known, Maimala Buni, the National Secretary of the party also added that other interested candidates could still pick up the form if they so desire. In his statement, he tried to explain how the President emerged the party's sole Presidential candidate. He said "Once the National executive Committee NEC of the party passes a vote of confidence on the President, that President stands accepted because the NEC is the highest organ of the party and it met to take the decision, where every interest was represented so the National Executive Committee of the APC has passed a vote of confidence on our President and that means every APC member has endo...
