Bakare Blames Country’s Woes on Corrupt Leaders

To Citadel Global Community Church Senior Pastor Tunde Bakare, corrupt leaders have steered the country to its current state. Bakare, who contested with President Muhammadu Buhari as running mate in the 2011 claimed the President never listened to his ideas on how to move the country forward. The cleric, who spoke with BBC Yoruba, recalled how Nigerians voted for Buhari because they believed thought that he would understand Nigeria’s complexities and lead it on the right path being a former military leader. He said the same set of people who laid faulty foundation for the nation as youths have refused to quit the state as adults. They brought us here before they grew old in the job and refused to leave”, he said, warning that “Nigeria will continue to deteriorate unless we turn...

Femi Adesina: I Suddenly Remembered Why I Fell in Love With President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari spoke on Tuesday, warning troublemakers in the country that the picnic was over, and the next day, I saw this comment online from a Buharist, as lovers and admirers of the President are known: “I just finished watching the President on TV reading the riot act to troublemakers, and I couldn’t be prouder of the President. I suddenly remembered why I fell in love with the President.” That respondent sure spoke the minds of millions of Buharists in Nigeria and the Diaspora. The man we fell in love with is of iron and steel, one ready and willing to knock sense into contumacious heads, whipping everyone into line. And being kind to us in the process. A kind bully, if you like the oxymoron. How did things unfold that Tuesday afternoon, that led President Buhar...

Security: Every Nigerian has a Role to Play – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that every Nigerian has an active role to play to ensure the safety of the country, irrespective of their status. This was contained in his speech at the opening ceremony of a four-day special summit on national security convened by the House of Representatives in Abuja on Wednesday. The President lauded the green chamber organising the forum to allow stakeholders to brainstorm on issues affecting the country and the way forward at this critical time. Buhari, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, said security had become a major concern at global, regional and national levels. Presidency Explains Buhari’s Absence at Late COAS Burial

The presidency has disclosed the reason why President Muhammadu Buhari did not attend the funeral of late chief of army staff Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 other military officers who died in an air crash. It was earlier reported that there was furore over the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo at the funeral ceremony, in which many Nigerians, who condemned the action, described it as ‘lack of empathy.’ Although Buhari had in a statement released by his spokesman Femi Adesina, expressed sadness over the air crash condoling with families of the deceased, the military, and Nigerians in general, describing them as “heroes who paid the ultimate price for peace and security in the land.” But Nigerians were displeased over the president’s absence at the...

Nigerians Deserve to Know How Recovered Loot is Spent, Sultan Tells Buhari

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to publicise the details of recovered loot and how the money was expended, while asking the anti-graft agencies to be accountable to the people. He disclosed this on Tuesday when he featured on the zonal dialogue with stakeholders on the National Ethics and Integrity Policy organised by the Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The event was convened in collaboration with the anti-corruption agency, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission for the North-West in Sokoto. The Sultan charged the government to keep Nigerians abreast of how much loots it had recovered and what they were spent on. He said, “Nigerians need (an) explanation ...

How my Father Died in Battle, By Mahamat Idris Deby Itno – Femi Adesina

It is an uncommon development in modern days for a sitting President to die on the battlefield. But that was what happened in the Republic of Chad recently. Marshal Idris Deby Itno, a veteran of many battles and President of Chad, had led his forces into the field, as it was his won't. He won the battle, but didn’t win the war. The war for life, for survival, after he got fatally shot. Chad rallied itself, did perhaps the next best thing by setting up a Transitional Military Council, headed by the son of the deceased, Lt. Gen, Mahamat Idris Deby Itno. That Council is to run the country for 18 months, organize elections, and return the land to constitutional order. On Friday last week, President Muhammadu Buhari played host to Lt Gen Mahamat Itno at State House, Abuja. Rather ironi...

Buhari Seeks Senate Approval for Fresh N2.3trn External Loan

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has asked the Senate to approve another N2.3trillion ($6.18bn) external loan. This is contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and read at plenary on Tuesday. Buhari said the proposed loan which is equivalent to N2.3trillion is to finance the 2021 budget deficit of N5.6 trillion. Buhari said the loan would enable the Federal Government to fund critical infrastructural projects in transportation, health, and education among others. This is coming barely a month after the Senate approved the sum of $1.5bn and €995 million external borrowings for the Federal Government. The loans were part of the $5.5 billion and €995 million external borrowings Buhari had, in May 2020, asked the Red Chamber to ...

Femi Adesina: Lessons For Nigeria From EPL

Manchester City football club was on Tuesday confirmed winner of the 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL). For those who follow football keenly, whether it is played in the dusty fields of Ajegunle, in Lagos, the La Liga in Spain, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, or EPL, this was one pulsating season, filled with excitement, despite the absence of physical spectators, due to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic. As someone who gets his kick from football (from what do you get your’s?) the fact that Manchester City got crowned champions three games to the end of the season, after Manchester United lost 1-2 at home to Leicester City, holds great significance even for our country, and what she is currently passing through. Unique lessons can be drawn, which can inspire us as a people. Si...
