FG Expends N50bn Monthly for Electricity Subsidy – Power Minister

The Federal Government has been expending N50bn monthly for the subsidy of electricity supply across the country, the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has said. Mamman said the subsidy was occasioned by the constant complaints by poor Nigerians over the unavoidable and periodic increase in the cost of electricity. He said the Federal Government provided the funds to make up for the shortfall by the power distribution companies who had been unable to meet up with the cost of bulk electricity supplied to them by the generating companies. He went on to note that the subsidy had now decreased by half, but still constituted a serious drain on the nation’s economy following a minor increase in the tariff regime. Many people sustained varying degrees of injury while some residents fled as a gas plant exploded in Rumuodomaya community, Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday night, African News Today has gathered. Minister of Power Directs NERC to Suspend Reviewed Electricity Tariff

The minister of power, Saleh Mamman, has asked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to suspend the implementation of the reviewed electricity tariff. The directive followed the approval by NERC on Tuesday for an increase in electricity tariff across the federation. The minister in a statement issued on Thursday said the tariff review will be suspended until the conclusion of the joint ad hoc committee’s work at the end of January. According to Mamman, the government had initially reduced the tariff of all categories of electricity consumers to help Nigerians cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. NERC Ratifies Fresh Increase in Electricity Tariff

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has ratified an increase in electricity tariff across the country, effective from January 1, 2021. This was contained in a directive issued on December 31, 2020, signed by NERCC chairman, Sanusi Garba. The regulatory commission disclosed that the new tariff will remain valid until the issuance of another minor review order or an extraordinary tariff review order by the commission, The Cable reports. Electricity Consumers to Get Refund for Meter Payment – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said that electricity consumers who already paid for meters under the Meter Asset Provider scheme will be refunded. This was contained in an emailed response to Punch, through the commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Michael Faloseyi. The clarification followed the recent announcement by the Federal Government that six million meters would be distributed free of charge to consumers under the National Mass Metering Programme, MAP, prompting some consumers who already paid for meters to inquire if their money would be refunded.
