Nigeria: Kingsley Moghalu’s YPP, Fela Durotoye’s ANN Form Alliance

The leadership of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and Young Progressives Party (YPP), on Friday, merged to form a new coalition known as ‘The Force’. This was confirmed in a statement signed by ANN’s National Chairman, Emmanuel Dania and his YPP counterpart, Comrade Bishop Amakiri. According to both parties, ‘The Force’ is to help salvage Nigeria from those they said have held it hostage for far too long. The statement reads in full: JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY THE LEADERSHIP OF THE ALLIANCE FOR NEW NIGERIA (ANN) AND YOUNG PROGRESSIVES PARTY (YPP) ON THE EMERGENCE OF A COALITION FORCE IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS AT THE ANN NATIONAL SECRETARIAT, #20, DURBAN STREET, WUSE 2, ABUJA ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2019. Breaking News: Ezekwesili Drops Out of Presidential Race to Give Room for a Coalition

Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili has announced her withdrawal from the Presidential race. Her reason for withdrawing is to give room for a proper coalition that will have the muscle to defeat the People's Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in the forth coming elections. The announcement was made through Ozioma Ubabukoh, the Obiageli Ezekwesili Presidential Campaign Organisation. According to the statement, this decision was reached after due consultations with Nigerians at home and abroad. A critical examination of Nigeria's electoral reality after the presidential debate which held on Saturday the 19th of January 2019 also influenced the decision. She said "This decision followed extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past f...

SASU Condemns the Violent and Criminal Actions of the Zimbabwean Government on its People and Student Leaders

The Southern African Student Union (SASU) is utterly disgusted and dismayed by the ongoing criminal behaviour being carried out by security forces in Zimbabwe. The corrupt Zimbabwean government continues to cripple its own economy and creates its own problems, this is owing to a failure to manage the economy and other geopolitical factors. Zimbabwean citizens like all other civilians in a democratic state have the right to protest, a right which is protected by the constitution of that country and an established practice globally. It is criminal and unjust for the regime of President Mnangwangwa to respond to the peoples outcry, by use of the military, for the military is trained to protect borders and not instill fear and discipline amongst its people. The abuse of the security cluster...

Africa: Impose Sanctions on France and Other Countries that Impoverish Africa – Di Maio to the EU

He said France had "never stopped colonising tens of African states". Luigi di Maio called on the European Union to impose sanctions on France for its policies in Africa. He said France had "never stopped colonising tens of African states". Ever since Italy's Five Star and League parties came to power in June 2018 relations have been tense. Much of the tension has been about migration. The two countries have argued over France sending back migrants across Italy's northern border. When France criticised Italy for not allowing rescue boats carrying migrants in the Mediterranean to dock, Italy responded by accusing France itself of refusing to accept migrants. Mr Di Maio made his latest comments during a visit to central Italy at the weekend. It came as the UN said about 17...

Nigeria: Press Statement by APC President Campaign Council on Atiku’s Clandestine Visit to the U.S

In our press release issued on Sunday, December 30, 2018, titled “WHEN THE THIEF IS SHOUTING THIEF”: THE CASE OF ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR”, we correctly predicted as follows: “By running for President of Nigeria, Atiku intends to get some immunity from prosecution. Already he is hoping to obtain a visa to visit the US, as a guest of the State department, a concession that the US will grant to a Presidential candidate of Africa’s biggest Nation”. Therefore, we were not surprised by his visit to the U.S. For us, this visit is really a non-event considering the issues involved in the forthcoming election. However, we have bad news for those who think this is a momentous event for Atiku Abubakar: the visit was nothing but a downright catastrophe because rather than dispel the fact of indictmen...

Opinion: Points for Concern and Action by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

I am concerned as a democrat who believes that with faithful and diligent practice of democracy, we can get over most of our political problems and move steadfastly and surefootedly on the course of stability, unity of purpose, socio-economic growth and progress for all. Democracy becomes a sham if elections are carried out by people who should be impartial and neutral umpires, but who show no integrity, acting with blatant partiality, duplicity and imbecility. For all democrats and those carrying out the process of elections, there must be the red line that must not be crossed in tactics and practices of democracy. I personally have serious doubt about the present INEC’s integrity, impartiality and competence to conduct a fair, free and credible election. And if the INEC is willing,...

Opinion: Why the Code of Conduct Tribunal Lacks Jurisdiction to Try the CJN – by Emmanuel Jakpa

Word on the street is that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen admitted guilt to the Code of Conduct investigators and tried to excuse it by pleading mistake. The next line of argument is that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. I heard it from a layman like Fisayo Soyombo who said that the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria has already been convicted in the court of public opinion. Then I heard it from Prof. Oyebode on national television and then from a radical young lawyer I admire so much Mr. Umar Sa’ad. The question really is who is ignorant of the law? According to the reports in the news, Chief Justice Onnoghen was visited by operatives of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) on 10/1/19 and he admitted in writing that a Standard Chartered Bank Account...

Opinion: New IGP – Why Progressive Northerners Should be Embarrassed by Farooq Kperogi

In August 2015, when I first publicly voiced out my disapproval of what I called the embarrassingly undisguised 'Arewacentricity' of Buhari’s appointments, a few people, mostly southerners, asked why I was bothered since I'm a northern Muslim who is “favored” by such appointments—“favored,” that is, on the emotional and symbolic plane. I was and still am—bothered for at least four reasons. One, I criticized similar such parochial appointments by previous presidents from the South. It would be hypocritical to look the other way because I'm now “favored” by such appointments. (Yes, I have more friends and acquaintances in powerful positions in this government than I’ve ever had since 1999). Two, Buhari came to power on the promise of “change,” on the promise of doing things differen...

Nigeria: Stop Harrassing the CJN or We Will Mobilize and Shake the Country – Niger Delta Agitators

A coalition known as the Niger Delta Agitators has issued a warning to the Federal Government regarding what they term the harassment of the Chief Justice of the federation. According to the group, this harassment was simply based on the fact that the CJN was from the South-south and not from the North. In a statement released by Niger Delta Watchdogs' General John Dukku the group stated as follows: "The General Assembly of the Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators is shocked to learn about the arraignment of the Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen over allegations of his false declaration of assets based on a petition written by one Mr. Dennis Aghanya of the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative. The CJN is suffering just because he is ...
