My Party Members Are Nigerians Battling Hunger, Unemployment, Poverty – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday said he had no plan to float any political party in the future. Obasanjo who was in Kabul in Afghanistan, as a guest of President Ashraf Ghani, accused some unnamed persons of planning to drag his name in the mud. Obasanjo, who was reacting to a report that he had picked three ex-govs as coordinators of a new party,’ described it as a fabrication. The former president in a statement on Monday by his Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Kehinde Akinyemi, said he was not shocked by the report. The statement reads partly,  “He said that the fabricated story hardly comes as a surprise because he has, for some time now, observed with bewilderment the efforts by some people to drag him into their political games. “Upon hearing of this la...

Why IBB annulled Abiola’s June 12 1993 Victory – Obasanjo

Barely 28 years after, former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday lamented the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election, presumably won by the late philanthropist, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola. He blamed the cancellation on “bad belle”. The election, adjudged to be most peaceful, credible and fair, was annulled by the military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. Obasanjo said the annulment robbed Egbaland and Ogun State the rare privilege of having three of its prominent sons occupying the number one leadership position in the country at different times. The elder statesman, who was referring to former Head of Interim National Government(ING), Chief Ernest Shonekan, himself, who governed the country first as a military Head of State and a civilian president, apparent...

Obasanjo Defends Decision to Present Yar’Adua For Presidential Election Despite His Kidney Transplant

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has defended the decision to field former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate in the 2007 general elections. Obasanjo said he knew Yar’Adua was ill but he had been medically certified as fit by the then ruling party prior to his emergence as the party’s candidate. He added that he got medical advice that Yar'Adua, who had a kidney transplant, was fit to run as President. Obasanjo made the revelation while responding to questions in an online interview with a Nigerian historian and professor of African Studies, Toyin Falola on Sunday. Falola had asked Obasanjo to respond to allegations of imposing the Late Yar'dua despite knowing his health status. Obasanjo described the allegations as ...

Obasanjo is Nigeria’s Divider-in-Chief – Presidency

In his most recent statement former President Olusegun Obasanjo attempts to divide the nation while President Muhammadu Buhari continues to promote nation building and the unity of Nigeria. The difference is clear. From the lofty heights of Commander-in-Chief, General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of Divider-in-Chief (to adapt the coinage of Time). Before responding further to the unfair attacks on President Buhari and his administration by the former President, it is important that we categorically state that contrary to the assertions by a few analysts, the recent speech in which President Buhari advised West African Presidents against tenure elongation beyond constitutional limits has been consistent with his long held views on the need to adhere to the rule of law. ...

Nigeria: Get Obasanjo Arrested, He Doesn’t Mean Well for the Country – Miyetti-Allah

In a letter dated July 15, Obasanjo asked the president to take decisive action on insecurity, saying the situation could degenerate into a full-blown crisis if not tackled appropriately. Obasanjo said rather than “hammer” the farmer-herder crisis, the impression is that the government of Buhari is treating it with kid gloves. Reacting to this letter in an interview with PUNCH, Alhassan Saleh, national secretary of Miyetti Alla Hore, asked Obasanjo to offer any information he has in order to solve the security crisis. “The fact that there is insecurity, I don’t think the Fulani are responsible for it. The narrative that we are responsible for the insecurity is even the problem we have with the Nigerian state,” he said. “When any crime happens, even before there is an investigat...
