Ondo2020: INEC Flags 270 Coastal Polling Units as Hotspots

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed plans to utilise the country’s security outfits to quell threats to the peaceful conduct of the Ondo State governorship election especially in riverine areas and other hotspots in the state. According to INEC, Ondo has 62 creeks and over 270 Polling Units in the fluvial areas of Ese-Odo and Ilaje Local Government Areas of the state. The Court of Appeal in Abuja today has upheld the election of the Bayelsa State governor, Duoye Diri. The court set aside the August 18, 2020 verdict of the Bayelsa State Governorship Petitions Tribunal which had ordered a fresh poll to be conducted within 90 days. The Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), had petitioned the court over alleged unlawful exclusion of its candidate, King George from the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The tribunal had in a split decision of two-to-one, voided the November 16, 2019 Bayelsa State governorship poll. Update: FG Orders Reopening of Unity, Private Schools

The Federal Government has approved the reopening of all Unity Schools in Nigeria with effect from October 12. Government shutdown schools indefinitely in March as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, disclosed this during a news briefing in Abuja on Friday. Adamu also stated that private and state schools are allowed to fix resumption dates. He added that schools who fail to comply to stipulated COVID-19 safety guidelines, risk being shutdown if there is an outbreak from such schools. “We have come to the conclusion that we have to review our decisions. After consultation with PTF, we have resolved that our Unity Schools be opened on October 12, 2020,” he said.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Lagos state chapter has debunked claims by Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige that the union’s strike action was informed by disagreement over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and that the salaries of lecturers were being paid in full while on strike.
