NBC Okays 67 New Radio, TV Stations

The Federal Government has ratified 67 new broadcast licences for radio and television stations nationwide. This was disclosed by the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mallam Balarabe Ilelah on Thursday. Ilelah urged broadcasters not to relent abiding by the NBC Act, the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, the Electoral Act, and any extant law that guides media operations to ensure that the general election is free, fair, and credible. The development comes less than three months to the end of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. Critics label it a parting gift from the Buhari administration. NBC Fines Arise TV N2m Over Report on Tinubu   

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has announced a N2 million fine for Arise television over a fake report about Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC. This was contained in a statement issued by Balarabe Shehu Helah, the NBC Director General. Arise television had broadcast a report that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was carrying out an investigation into Tinubu’s alleged drug trafficking crime. NBC Makes U-Turn, Suspends Shutdown Of Broadcast Stations

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has postponed the deadline to shut down broadcast stations whose licenses were withdrawn. Recall that NBC had on Friday announced the revoke of the licenses of African Independent Television, AIT, Silverbird Television, STV, and 50 other broadcast stations over growing debt. The Director-General of the commission, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, stated that the affected stations are owing up to N2 billion. Consequently, the commission ordered the shut down of the stations within 24 hours. However, the commission in a fresh statement issued on Saturday extended the shutdown to Tuesday, August 23, 2022. Trust TV Fined N5 Million by NBC Over Documentary on Bandits

Television broadcasting network, Trust TV, has been fined N5 million by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its broadcast of a documentary titled “Nigeria’s Banditry”. The television network has been fined for broadcasting a documentary showcasing the activities of bandits, the documentary titled “Nigeria’s banditry - the inside story” which aired on the 5th of March, 2022. SERAP Chides NBC, Issues 48 Hours Ultimatum Over ChannelsTV Suspension

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has issued a 48 hours ultimatum to the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to reverse what it described as the unconstitutional and illegal suspension and a fine of N5 million on Channels Television or face a lawsuit. Reports say the Acting Director-General of the Commission, Professor Armstrong Idachaba, in a letter to the Managing Director of Channels Television, referred to Channels 7pm live broadcast programme of Sunday, 25th April 2021, in which it indicted the TV station of interviewing a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) allegedly without "caution or reprimand."
