Polls have opened in Cameroon with President Paul Biya seeking a seventh term. Polling stations opened at 8am (07:00GMT) and will close at 6pm (17:00GMT) with more than six million people eligible to cast their ballots. Biya, 85, faces an attempt by the opposition parties to forge a unified front under Maurice Kamto, leader of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC). Biya has been in power since 1982, making him one of Africa's longest-serving rulers. Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan reporting from the capital, Yaounde said many voters were staying away from polling stations. "Not many voters have showed up at the polling station where the president is expected to cast his vote shortly. Election observers and officials we spoke to have also told us they are not seeing a high voter tur...

Opinion: Ten Years After Lamidi Adedibu by Reuben Abati

It has been ten years since the self-styled “strong man of Ibadan politics”, Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Akanji Adedibu, died. He died on June 11, 2008. I do not recall seeing many tributes or advertisements in the newspapers or other media commemorating his life and legacy. There was no public lecture or any important statements from those who were his protégés. That this is so is a useful lesson to today’s political Godfathers and henchmen in Nigerian politics who behave as if history has already assigned to them an immortal space on its pages. Lamidi Adedibu was a colossal presence in the politics of Ibadan, and Oyo state for more than 50 years. Ibadan has a tradition of colourful politicians who wielded enormous influence: Adegoke Adelabu, the brilliant orator and intellectually gifted per...

Nigeria: Ben Bruce Bows Out of Senatorial Race to Allows Others Run

As the Bayelsa State chapter of the People's Democratic Party goes in for its primaries today, Senator Ben-Murray Bruce has decided not to contest to return to the Senate. According to the senator, his decision not to run was to honour the rotational arrangement existing in the 3 local governments that make up his senatorial district. His letter to the this effect is published in full below: “I thank God and the good people of Brass, Bayelsa East Senatorial District,  who offered me the golden opportunity four years ago to represent them and the state in the Senate, Nigeria’s highest lawmaking chamber. “It is without a doubt that I have tried to discharge my duties as a legislator and representative of my people creditably to the best of my ability so far. “My voice has been ve...

Opinion: Extricating Lagos from the Captivity of Bola Tinubu by Femi Aribisala

The drama currently going on in APC over who will be the party’s flag-bearer in the coming gubernatorial election in Lagos is as fascinating as it is disturbing. The same party that schemed to ensure that Buhari is the sole APC presidential candidate for 2019, is determined that Akinwumi Ambode, the current Governor of Lagos State, is not the APC candidate in the gubernatorial election in 2019. If Buhari who has performed abysmally, is given an automatic second-term ticket, why not Ambode? Godfather-cracy All this turns on the whims and caprices of one man, Bola Tinubu; the self-styled “godfather” of Lagos and even South-west politics. Tinubu is determined that Ambode must be unseated, and he has refused the entreaties of the president, the vice-president and other APC stalwarts outs...

Nigeria: APC a Party of Fraudsters as Confirmed by Ambode – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday said it reviewed the world press conference held by the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, and surmised that the governor validated its position that the All Progressives Congress allegedly consists of those it described as fraudsters and election riggers. Governor Ambode had in the press conference stated that his opponent in the race, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was arrested for spending fake dollars in the United States of America. Ambode further stated that Sanwo-Olu was detained in the USA on account of the alleged crime. The governor further alleged that his party, the APC, was disenfranchising its members by insisting that registered members of the party, who were yet to be issued with membership cards, will not be allowed to participate ...

Nigeria: It’s Official! Tinubu Dumps Ambode, Presents Jide Sanwo-Olu

The ruling party’s national leader says Akinwunmi Ambode has deviated from developmental blueprint of Lagos, urging primary participant to reject him. Bola Tinubu has endorsed Jide Sanwo-Olu as the preferred candidate for the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming governorship election in Lagos, ending weeks of speculation about where he stands on the stand-off between the challenger and incumbent governor, Akinwumi Ambode. In a statement Sunday evening, Mr Tinubu said the blueprint of Lagos State, his brainchild between 1999-2007, has been deviated from by Mr Ambode, calling on APC members in Lagos to reject the governor at the primaries on Monday. The statement comes shortly after Mr Ambode used a televised press conference to launch a barrage of personal attacks against Mr S...

Nigeria: Omisore’s Support of APC Shameful – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode has described Iyiola Omisore's decision to support the APC in today's supplementary election as shameful. Fani-Kayode had stated days earlier that Omisore was his cousin and he had spoken to him. He was assured that Omisore will support the PDP. He had tweeted "Iyiola Omisore will not let us down. He is my cousin and I have spoken to him. We are together. We will show Tinubu what happens when the Ifes stand together. We are going to end the APC's reign of tyranny in the rerun on Thursday. @OfficialPDPNig's Demola Adeleke shall prevail." Following the news of Omisore's decision to throw his support behind APC, Fani-Kayode said "Iyiola Omisore's decision to support the APC in tomorrow's rerun is shameful. It is sad that he would seek to deny Ile-Ife the position of Dep...

Opinion: Still on the Osun Elections

The gubernatorial election held in Osun State on Saturday has once again brought up the issue of the Independent National Electoral Commission's powers to declare an election as "inconclusive" and the circumstances under which it could so declare. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended clearly spells out the condition under which a governorship candidate can be declared winner of an election. Section 179(2)(a)(b) of the 1999 Constitution provides: “A candidate for an election to the office of a governor of a state shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates- (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election;and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of least two-thirds of ...
