Breaking News: Buhari Seeks to Confirm Tanko as CJN, Urges Quick Confirmation by Senate

Following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council that Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad be confirmed as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the nomination and forwarded same to the Senate for confirmation. The NJC had made this recommendation on Wednesday and the President's acceptance was confirmed by the Senate President who presented Tanko's name to the house for confirmation. A lawyer and human rights defender, Olusayo Adeleye on Wednesday condemned the barbaric action of Senator Elisha Aboo, senator representing Adamawa-North Senatorial Districts who publicly assaulted a woman tried to intervene in an altercation he had with another lady, a store owner, while shopping in her store. The Senate has passed seven of the at least 16 bills rejected so far this year by President Muhammadu Buhari. The bills are the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Bill, National Research and Innovation Council Bill, Stamp Duties Act (Amendment) Bill, National Agricultural Seed Council Bill, Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (Amendment) Bill and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill. Buhari had expressed reservations about the constitutionality of passing the bills into law, and therefore wrote the Senate to reconsider them.
