Femi Falana, the lead counsel of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has asked the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to apologise to the members of the union. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and human rights lawyer also criticized the speaker for denying the agreement reaches with ASUU. 439 Foreign-trained Doctors Failed Competence Exam – MDCN

A total of 439 foreign-trained medical and dental graduates failed the assessment examination organised by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). The MDCN conducted the two-day assessment examination on November 23 and 24, 2022, at Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. This was stated by Dr Tijani Sanusi, the council’s Registrar, in an interview with Punch on Sunday. According to Sanusi, 916 foreign-trained medical and dental candidates took the assessment examination but only 477 candidates were successful. The Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has disclosed that 507 medical doctors practicing in the state relocated to the United Kingdom in less than two years due to poor working conditions in Nigeria. Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, the association’s Chairman stated this while interacting with Punch Health Wise. He urged the Federal and State governments to tackle the menace of brain drain in the country’s health sector. It was also confirmed that the eight-month arrears owed to the university teachers were not paid. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has asked the Federal Government to pay the salary arrears of lecturers or risk abandonment of backlogs of academic activities prompted by its eight months strike.
