Opinion: The Bogus Case against Omoyele Sowore by Femi Aribisala

What we now have is a government overtaken by paranoia. Omoyele Sowore planned a nationwide demonstration against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.  He captioned it “RevolutionNow.”  Every right-thinking Nigerian knows Nigeria needs a revolution of sorts.  Things cannot just continue the way they have been over the years. However, Omoyele’s so-called revolution was not designed to overthrow the government.  It certainly could not have done that.  You don’t overthrow a government by gathering a few thousand people in Lagos, Abuja and a handful other cities where you make speeches about what is wrong with Nigeria and the government. At best, his “revolution” was designed to embarrass the government.  It was intended to show that the presidential election result, where ...

Nigeria: Let the Court Decide El Zakzaky’s Fate – Presidency

The Presidency appeals to El-Zakzaky-led Shiite members to desist from needless violent street protests and await the decision of the court in Kaduna where their leader is currently being tried. The issue of El-ZakZaky is before the court in Kaduna and his supporters should focus on his on-going trial instead of causing daily damages, disruptions and public nuisance in Abuja. It is wrong to be in court and resort to violence at the same time in order to get justice for anybody accused. The destruction of public property in the name of protest is not within the right of this group of Shiite members and no government anywhere would have tolerated a situation where any group would take over public roads in cities as they have done in Abuja and interfere with the rights of other citiz...

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar, SAN, told the tribunal that the defendant was at liberty to summon any of the listed but uncalled witnesses to testify on his behalf if he so wished.
