Edo, Ondo Polls Must go Ahead as Postponement will Create Constitutional Logjam– INEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged its commitment to conduct peaceful and credible elections in Edo and Ondo states, saying that doing otherwise will pave way for a “constitutional logjam that may be difficult to resolve.” This was disclosed by the Chairman, Information and Voters Education Committee, Festus Okoye at a sensitisation forum for the media in Benin, on Thursday, Punch published. Speaking on the importance of going ahead with the poll, Okoye said “Political Parties and all the critical stakeholders in the electoral process must see the conduct of these elections as a national project that must be executed in strict compliance with all the safety protocols. “There is no alternative to the peaceful conduct of these elections as the alternative will l...

Nigeria: No Country Has Perfect Elections – INEC to the U.S

In a response to the reports the U.S on the 2019 general elections, INEC has said that there is no country in the world that has a perfect election. This response was given by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman. It will be recalled that the U.S and other international observers had made some observations that scored the last elections quite low. The U.S embassy had earlier released a statement where it made its views on the 2019 general elections known. It had said "As long-time friends of Nigeria, we continue to follow closely the ongoing elections. We do not have a preferred party or candidate. "As noted by many observer groups in their preliminary reports, we too were disappointed by the low voter turnout as well as credible reports of voter intimidation, v...

Nigeria: Kaduna State Commissioner Calls Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu of INEC a Biafra Apologist

A commissioner commissioner of Women Affairs & Social Development in Kaduna State, Hafsat M Baba, has referred to Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu as a Biafra-apologist. In a tweet that has sparked off outrage from Nigerians, she said "The unsung hero, in this very anticlimactic turn of events, is our dear Amina Zakari. She was bullied out of the logistics position in INEC and replaced by a male, Biafra-apologist Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu. She has been vindicated, one of our very own Arewa Sheroes." In her tweet, she had been commenting on the agitation for the removal of Amina Zakari. Supporting her position, another Twitter user with the handle @TweetKhalifa said "It wasn't bigotry/sexism when they were fighting Amina Zakari tooth and nails. It is now, that @HafsatMohBaba decided to turn i...

Opinion: Still on the Osun Elections

The gubernatorial election held in Osun State on Saturday has once again brought up the issue of the Independent National Electoral Commission's powers to declare an election as "inconclusive" and the circumstances under which it could so declare. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended clearly spells out the condition under which a governorship candidate can be declared winner of an election. Section 179(2)(a)(b) of the 1999 Constitution provides: “A candidate for an election to the office of a governor of a state shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates- (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election;and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of least two-thirds of ...

Opinion: A Compromised INEC is Murdering Nigeria’s Hard Earned Democracy by Mike Ozekhome SAN

The announcement by INEC,that the Osun state election conducted on Saturday,22nd September2018,was inconclusive and the fixing of 27th of September for a so called rerun,is a dangerous subversion and travesty of the electoral process,a blow to our hard earned constitutional democracy and an ominous sign of the farce to expect in 2019-subversion of the people's will. INEC has earned for itself the inglorious reputation of holding inconclusive elections (Kogi,Bayelsa,et al);and working in cahoot with the ruling APC party, always eager to do its dirty electoral bidding,to commit daylight robbery of votes. This they have just done to Adeleke's votes to defeat the will and legitimate franchise of the good people of Osun state. I wholly condemn this ludicrous mockery of our electoral proce...

Nigeria: Underage Voters are Registered Because Registration Officers’ Lives are Threatened – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission says some underage voters are being registered in some parts of the country because the lives of registration officers are being threatened by some members of the community. The Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said this on Wednesday during a programme on the African Independent Television titled, ‘Kakaaki.’ Osazze-Uzzi, while answering questions over pictures and videos on the social media showing children registering and voting in northern Nigeria, said when officials refused to register underage persons, their lives were threatened by members of the community and they eventually caved in. The INEC director said, “I agree that it is the responsibility of the registration officer to do that (refuse to...
