Sports: Nigeria Beat Gambia 6:0 to Qualify for AWCON

The Nigerian Super Falcons beat the Queen Scorpions of Gambia by 6:0 yesterday in Lagos to qualify for the 11th African Women Cup of Nations. The Nigerians had earlier beaten the Gambians on their home turf 1:0. This brings the aggregate score to 7:0. Having won 9 out of the 10 previous AWCON championships, the Nigerians are set to win a 10th title. Teams that have also qualified for the finals include: Hosts Ghana, Algeria, Zambia, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Mali and South Africa.

Sports: Nigerian Super Eagles Lose 0:1 to Czech Republic

In its final friendly before traveling to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Nigerian Super Eagles this afternoon lost 0:1 to Czech Republic. In a game that was largely uninspiring, the Super Eagles conceded the only goal of the match in the 25th minute of the first half and were not able to get any past the Czech goalkeeper till the end of the first half. Upon resumption, the game was halted at about the 60th minute as a result of the heavy rains and wind that hampered play. When the game resumed, the Super Eagles took full control of the game, but could not convert the possession to a goal. Nigeria will be facing Croatia in the first of their 2018 World Cup games on June 16.

Former Super Eagles midfielder and member of the NFF technical committee, Garba Lawal has said that Gernot Rohr did not consult the technical committee before releasing the final 23-man list of the Super Eagles. As part of its preparations for the 2018 World Cup starting in Russia on June 14, the Nigerian Super Eagles lost by 2:1 to the English team in a friendly match played at the Wembly stadium. The English team took off to a quick start with a 7 minute goal headed in by Gary Cahill. They controlled the entire first half, missing a number of goals and then netting a second goal in the 39th through a Harry Kane shot. The replica of the Nigerian Super Eagle's kit which was released for sale to the public on June 1 has sold out on the first day with about three million pre-orders. People were seen queuing up outside Nike's store in London in a bid to get the kit which sold for £64.95 (about N32,000). The Nigerian kit appears to have won them new fans even as Nigerians encourage the Super Eagles to go to the world cup and be as successful as their kit's launch was.
