El-Zakzaky’s Followers Vow to Continue Protests in Abuja, Others

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Friday vowed to continue their protests until their leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky, and his wife Malama Zeenat Ibraheem, are released unconditionally. The Kaduna State Government charged El-Zakzaky and his wife with eight counts bordering on culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace. The two have remained in detention despite several court orders calling for their release. The government accused the IMN of not recognizing the Nigerian constitution and authority. His prolonged detention has fueled several protests by members of the Shiite movement in many Nigerian cities. Briefing reporters in Abuja, one of the top leaders of IMN, Abdullahi Musa, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to release El-Zakzaky and...

Nigeria: Government Outlawed Criminality of IMN, not Freedom of Worship – Presidency

Presidency says proscription of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has nothing to do with banning the larger numbers of peaceful and law abiding Shiites in the country from practicing their religion, instead it was to discourage wanton violence, murder and willful destruction of public and private property. The Presidency explains that contrary to the claim by IMN that it had been banned from practicing its religion, President Buhari's administration has not banned Shiites from observing their five daily prayers and going to Mecca to perform the Holy pilgrimage. Their position is blatantly false and deceptive. The IMN is deliberately changing the narrative in order to gain sympathy and divert the attention of the world from its terrorist activities, including attacking soldiers, ki...

Nigeria: Court Grants FG’s Request to Declare Shiite Terrorists

With several clashes between the Nigerian Police and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), aka Shiites, that led to the death of Usman Umar, Deputy Commissioner of police, Precious Owolabi, a Channels Television reporter and many others, Justice Nkeonye Maha, of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Friday declared the Shiites a terrorist organization. With the order according to Punch, the court restrained any person or group of persons from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN under any name or platform in Nigeria. Recall that this is not the first group that has been proscribed. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, were last two years declared a terrorists organization owing to their modus-operandi. However, a copy of the ex parte a...

Nigeria: Let the Court Decide El Zakzaky’s Fate – Presidency

The Presidency appeals to El-Zakzaky-led Shiite members to desist from needless violent street protests and await the decision of the court in Kaduna where their leader is currently being tried. The issue of El-ZakZaky is before the court in Kaduna and his supporters should focus on his on-going trial instead of causing daily damages, disruptions and public nuisance in Abuja. It is wrong to be in court and resort to violence at the same time in order to get justice for anybody accused. The destruction of public property in the name of protest is not within the right of this group of Shiite members and no government anywhere would have tolerated a situation where any group would take over public roads in cities as they have done in Abuja and interfere with the rights of other citiz...
