We don’t Know when COVID-19 Vaccines will Arrive — Health Minister

Nigeria's Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, yesterday disclosed that the Federal Government cannot categorically state when the much expected AstraZeneca vaccines will be delivered to the country. This is even as World Health Organisation (WHO) tells Nigeria to expect four million doses from COVAX next week. Recall that during the week, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, while addressing journalist at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing, stated that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines may likely arrive the country in one week. WHO Disqualifies Nigeria From Global Vaccine Bid

Nigeria’s bid to acquire COVID-19 vaccine has suffered a setback as the World Health Organisation-led COVAX global initiative has failed to shortlist the country for the Pfizer vaccines over its inability to meet the standard requirement of storing the vaccines at the required -70 degrees Celsius. The Nigerian government had expressed optimism t would receive 100,000 doses through the COVAX initiative, which was set up to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all countries, regardless of income level. However, the Director, WHO, African Region, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, while speaking during a virtual press conference which Saturday PUNCH attended said only four African countries were shortlisted for the Pfizer vaccine out of the 13 that applied. According to Moeti...

Nigeria Has Adequate Facilities to Store COVID-19 Vaccine – NPHCD Boss

Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director of National Primary Health Care Development Agency, has said Nigeria had adequate facility to store the 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine which the country is expecting to receive. This was contained in his speech during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-10 in Abuja on Monday. Shuaib debunked claims that the doses being expected would be wasted as a result of lack of storage facility. He said, “I want to reiterate that the first set of vaccine expected in the country is the Pfizer Biotech vaccine and the equipment required to store them –  the ultra-cold chain equipment –  are available at the National Strategic Cold Store of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.” According to Shuaib, it was the decision of...

Nigerians React to News of FG’s Receipt of Covid-19 Vaccine from Russia

When the news broke today that the Federal Government had taken delivery of Covid-19 samples from Russia, Nigerians reacted with a lot of pessimism and even scorn. While Nigeria's minister for health, Osagie Ehanire, said that the country indicated interest in the vaccine as a way of "exploring all knowledge in terms of therapeutics and vaccines,” Nigerians wide assumed that the vaccines were received in large quantities for immediate use on Nigerians. The minister stated that what was received was samples. It is however not clear if there will be human trials in Nigeria with those samples. With all the mystery that appears to have shrouded the issue of the pandemic, Nigerians are not receiving this news with enthusiasm. We have captured some comments on social media from a wide s...
