Justice Tanko Muhammad Steps Aside as CJN

Justice Tanko Muhammad, the current Chief Justice of Nigeria has stepped aside from that office. This confirmation came a few hours after rumours of his resignation hit the airwaves. According to Punch Newspapers, confirmation of this news was given by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Ahuraka Yusu Isah. He's reported to have said "the latest information is that the CJN has resigned; I spoke with somebody very close to him and he said he has resigned." It will be recalled that the CJN is currently the subject of certain allegations of high-handedness and favoritism. Breaking News: Buhari Seeks to Confirm Tanko as CJN, Urges Quick Confirmation by Senate

Following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council that Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad be confirmed as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the nomination and forwarded same to the Senate for confirmation. The NJC had made this recommendation on Wednesday and the President's acceptance was confirmed by the Senate President who presented Tanko's name to the house for confirmation. Nigeria: FG Woefully Fails to Prove Its Case Against CJN Walter Onnoghen

The Federal Government, on Thursday, closed its case against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, after it produced only three witnesses that testified before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT. Though FG initially expressed its intention to produce a total of six witnesses to substantiate all the allegations it levelled against the embattled CJN, however, shortly after the third witness was discharged, the prosecution counsel told the tribunal that it would be unnecessary to call further witnesses. The prosecution counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar, SAN, told the tribunal that the defendant was at liberty to summon any of the listed but uncalled witnesses to testify on his behalf if he so wished. Nigeria: Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Onnoghen, to be Arraigned at CCT Monday

The Federal Government has asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, to immediately vacate his exalted office as head of the nation’s judiciary over alleged sundry asset declaration issues. In a move to force Justice Onnoghen out of office, the Federal Government will on Monday January 14 arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.
