Gunmen Kidnap Bayelsa Commissioner, Otokito Federal

Gunmen have kidnapped the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade and Commence, Mr Otokito Federal Oparminola. According to investigations, Otokito was kidnapped by heavily armed men from his residence at Otuokpoti, Ogbia Local Government Area. The Bayelsa State Government has resolved the conflict between the students and management of the state-owned Niger Delta University over some policies that resulted in two days of a demonstration by the students. The resolution followed a mediatory meeting held on Wednesday at the instance of the state government, which had in attendance members of the Governing Council of the NDU and students’ representatives as well as other stakeholders. The students had marched round the university’s main campus at Amassoma to demand the reversal of the compulsory wearing of uniforms, closure of the fees payment portal and the ban on Students’ Union Government activities by the management. Bayelsa Govt. Says Schools To Resume Jan 11

Bayelsa State Government has directed all primary and secondary schools in the state to resume for the 2020/2021 academic session on Monday, January 11. This was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Education, Gentle Emelah. He said that all boarding students were expected to arrive in their schools on Sunday, January 10. Emelah equally directed the management of schools to ensure total adherence to the COVID-19 safety guidelines. According to him, the state government was concerned about the life of every pupil and would not condone flouting of the COVID-19 protocols.

Diri Signs N329bn 2021 Appropriation Bill into Law

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has signed the 2021 bill of N329.29 billion into law. The governor had on November 26 presented an estimate of N290.295 billion tagged, ‘Budget of Growth’ to the state House of Assembly. While assenting to the bill in Government House, Yenagoa, Diri said the increase in the figure would address areas of deficit identified in the appropriation bill as well as assist in the infrastructure development of the state. BREAKING: Supreme Court Dismisses Suit Against Bayelsa Governor, Deputy

A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed Douye Diri as the duly elected governor of Bayelsa State. In a unanimous judgement by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, the apex court dismissed the six appeals filed against the governor and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. Justice Ngwuta, in his judgement, predicated the dismissal of the appeals on the withdrawal of the six appeals by lawyers of the appellants. The appeals dismissed were filed by the Alliance for Democracy, Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party and Labour Movement, according to a report by Channels Television which was monitored by AfricanNewsToday. Bayelsa Election: Supreme Court Upholds Governor Duoye Diri’s Candidacy

Nigeria’s apex court has upheld the candidacy of Duoye Diri as the legitimate candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 2019 primary election in Bayelsa state. Timi Alaibe, his rival at the elction, had approached the court challenging his candidacy in the election but the supreme court threw out the petition. Diri’s candidacy had been upheld by the Federal High court and the Court of Appeal but Alaibe took the case to the supreme court seeking to reclaim his stake as the legitimate candidate of the ruling party in oil rich, Bayelsa state.
