Sports Ministry Orders Immediate Dissolution Of NBBF’s Caretaker Committee

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Nigeria Basketball Federation Caretaker Committee headed by Musa Kida, ahead of the federation’s elections. In a letter addressed to Kida and Prof. Florence Adeyanju, member, Caretaker Committee, NBBF, the sports ministry, thanked the duo for their contributions to the development of basketball in Nigeria. The statement, signed by the Secretary-General of NBBF, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi, said: “As you may recall that the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, on May 4, 2021, inaugurated the Caretaker Committees for 31 National Sports Federations, including Basketball, to run the affairs of the respective Federations ahead of elections of their new Boards. ...

All the members of the country’s female basketball team, D’Tigress have vowed not to participate in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup to be hosted by Australia unless their demands are met. The team members in a four minutes and twelve seconds video posted on social media and obtained by African News Today cited poor treatment by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and the sports ministry as a reason for their action. D’Tigers Finish the Year as Best African Team

The Nigeria national basketball team has been ranked the best team in Africa on the FIBA Men’s World Ranking released on Wednesday. D’Tigers have experienced growth in fortune throughout the year and this marks a remarkable end to the year for the team. The team had enjoyed a steady rise in the ranking as they moved from 33rd Position to 23rd in the world back in September. Nigeria amassed a total of 433.3 points to rank 21st in the world, thanks to their good form during the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers. D’tigers also won all three matches played at the just concluded AfroBasket qualifier in Kigali, Rwanda. They won their matches against hosts Rwanda, South Sudan and Mali to finish first in the group.
