ASUU Strike: What FG Proposed As Increment In Professor’s Salaries – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has disclosed why a resolution is yet to be reached with the Federal Government. Stanley Ogoun, the Port Harcourt zonal coordinator of the union, in a statement stated that the Federal Government offered to increase the salaries of professors by N60,000 while that of other lecturers ranged between N30,000 to N60,000. The Federal Government has explained that the demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to be paid a backlog of salaries spanning the six-month strike duration is delaying its negotiations with the union. The FG insisted that ASUU members will not be paid the backlog of salaries withheld during the strike period. Strike To Continue As ASUU, FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock

The meeting between the Federal Government and the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday ended in a deadlock as both parties were not able to reach an agreement. ASUU had met with Professor Brigg’s renegotiation committee with a view to finding a solution to the lingering labour dispute which has resulted in the closure of the country’s universities for over six months. The meeting which took place at the National Universities Commission, NUC, headquarters, Abuja, ended without n agreement being reached. ASUU Strike: FG Discloses Strategy To End Lingering Strike

The Federal Government has said it will utilise voluntary conciliation as a solution to the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other university-based unions. This was stated by Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, on Tuesday during a 3-day capacity-building workshop on International Labour Standards and Dispute Resolution in Nigeria in Abuja. He said that voluntary conciliation was adopted instead of arbitration in order to hasten the resolution process with the university teachers.
