Nigeria: Supreme Court Declares Rivers State APC’s Primaries Illegal

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the order of a Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt, which last year barred the All Progressive Congress (APC) from conducting any primary election pending the determination of a suit brought before it by a team of 22 aggrieved members of the party. In a swift reaction, The Rivers State chapter of the APC urged Rivers people and other lovers of democracy “to ignore Senator Magnus Abe) and his allies for misrepresentation of facts on the Supreme Court ruling,” insisting that the candidacy of Tonye Cole and others of APC was not imperiled. The apex court in a judgment yesterday set aside the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which in October last year, upturned the interlocutory order of the high court in the political case. In a unanimous j...

Nigeria: Soyinka Endorses Kingsley Moghalu of YPP for President

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka shocked a lot of Nigerians when he endorsed Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), for President. Soyinka and his civil society group, Citizens Forum, made the announcement in a statement he personally signed, where he outlined circumstances leading up to the decision which he described as rigorous. Soyinka said he came back from the rumination on who would best do the job of leading Nigeria best before returning a verdict that it was Moghalu that he settled for. The statement read, “The nation has been brought to her knees. Internally, the blaring media testimony needs no augmentation. Beyond her borders, Nigeria is the tale of citizens designated pariahs of the global community for whom special dossiers are opened, an...

Nigeria: FCDA Prevents Atiku from Using Abuja Ground for Campaign Rally

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has stopped it from using the Old Parade Ground in Abuja for its presidential mega rally scheduled for this morning. While the PDP Presidential candidate is struggling for venue for its Abuja rally, President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is in Lagos today for a rally, expected to be the biggest in the South-west. However, the initial plan of shutting several roads for the President has been abandoned, following intense criticism by Lagosians. A statement, yesterday, by the Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said: “It might interest Nigerians to know that the PDP duly paid and secured permission to host our mega rally at the Old Par...

Opinion: Buhari, Tinubu and the Abdication of Responsibility By Dele Momodu

Fellow Nigerians, despite the open and brazen braggadocious posturings of the ruling party, things seem to be fast falling apart within the All People’s Congress (APC). The arrogance of power probably must have misled some of the powerful gladiators in the party that they are invincible and infallible. But unwarranted arrogance and pride go forth before a calamitous fall. There seems no doubt that the APC also underrates the extensive networks and connections of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who has been in this race for 25 solid years. Speak to most of them, they will boastfully tell you that Buhari owns the North of Nigeria, as if the North is one State or monolithic or homogenous region. Except for those too lazy to analyse the ethnic, religious and political configuration of Nigeria, the...

Opinion: 2019 Elections and Amina Zakari by Reuben Abati

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised severally in the lead up to the 2019 general elections, that he would ensure a free, fair, transparent and credible process, and defend the right of the people to choose. But the appointment, literally on the eve of the election of a niece of his, Mrs Amina Zakari as the INEC Commissioner in charge of the National Results Collation Centre has placed a big question mark on that declaration. The attempt to deny any form of blood relation or filial connection between the President and the INEC official is grossly unconvincing. It has deepened suspicions, and exposed the incompetence and insensitivity of those who proposed her for that position in the first place. INEC faces an integrity challenge. It must address it. Ms Zakari is however, not n...

Nigeria: IPOB Insists on Boycotting the 2019 General Elections

The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has insisted that its position on boycotting the 2019 elections has not changed. In a statement credited to Mazi Alphonsus Uche Okafor-Mefor, the deputy leader of the group, the group said "Forget all the noise, disregard all self-destructive, nocturnal activities and conducts of baby opportunists whose stock in trade is treachery in Biafra land. Truth is that we have made up our minds, crossed boundaries and calibrated territories and guess what ? We have firmly established ourselves both in minds and presence of friends and foes. We, therefore, make bold to state with every ounce of certainty and beyond every conceivable equivocation that nobody can question the wisdom in "boycotting the fraudulent election" of the zoo ca...

Nigeria: Our First Priority is Keeping America Safe and Secure – APC

A website identified as APC's official website has been reported to have published plagiarized content. In a thoroughly embarrassing development, the title of one of the pages read "Our Priority is Keeping America Safe and Secure". The content on said page continued thus "Assertively pontificate long-term high-impact testing procedures wiProgressively synergize timely action items and business “outside the box” thinking. Distinctively foster best-of-breed markets before collaborative schemas. Authoritatively embrace tactical potentialities vis-a-vis low-risk high-yield architectures. Nigeria: Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Onnoghen, to be Arraigned at CCT Monday

The Federal Government has asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, to immediately vacate his exalted office as head of the nation’s judiciary over alleged sundry asset declaration issues. In a move to force Justice Onnoghen out of office, the Federal Government will on Monday January 14 arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts. The charge sighted by PRNigeria against Justice Onnoghen has already being filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal. The Federal Government among others is accusing Nigeria’s Head of the J...
