Nigeria: Mikel’s Dad Kidnapped 4 Hours Before Argentinian Match

Mikel's dad was kidnapped about four hours before the kick-off Super Eagle's last group match which was with Argentina. Just before the match, he was called by a family member who informed him of the kidnap and gave him a number to call. Mikel called the number and was told to pay a ransom of N10 million and not to inform anyone or else his dad will be killed. According Mikel, he could not inform the NFF because of the threat and also because he did not want it to be a source of distraction to the team. The Samba boys beat the Mexican team by 2:0 to advance to the quarter finals of the World Cup. Both teams played out a goalless first half with the Mexicans enjoying more of the ball possession. In the second half, Neymar put Brazil in the lead in the 51st minute while Firmino doubled the lead in the 88 minute. Belgium looked like they were surely on their way out when Japan scored the first two goals of the match in about 7 minutes of the resumption of the second half. This was after the first half ended goalless. Having played a goalless first half, the Japanese came in and shocked the Belgians with two quick goals. The first was scored in the 48 minute by Haraguchi. Inui followed 4 minutes later with the second, stunning Belgians and the rest of the world. In a match that started with two quick goals - one for each side, there was surprisingly no other goals. After Jorgensen scored for the Danes in the very 1st minute of the game and Croatia equalized barely 3 minutes later through Mandzukic, more goals were expected by the fans but this was not to be. The game went into extra time and still no further goals were recorded. Japan has advanced to the second round of the World Cup even after losing 0:1 to Poland. Poland went into the match knowing they had already dropped out of the World Cup. Poland got their goal in the 59th minute through Bednarek and the Japanese were unable to respond through the rest of the match. The Japanese had 4 points and were hoping to win the match. Senegal has crashed out of the World Cup after losing 0:1 to Colombia. Senegal was Africa's last representative in the tournament which means no African side made it out of the groups. A 74th minute goal from Colombia's Yerry Mina ensured the Africans did not proceed to the next round. Switzerland qualified for the second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup by defeating Costa Rica 2:2. Costa Rica were already out of the tournament an were only playing for pride. They were however unable to get maximum points against a Swiss team that needed just a draw. The Swiss got the first goal of the match in the 31st minute through Dzemaili. Costa Rica leveled scores in the 56th minute through Waston.
