Botswana who are making their first appearance at the tournament won their first match 4-2 against Burundi on Monday while the Super Falcons lost 2-1 to Banyana Banyana of South Africa. The result left Nigeria needing a win against Botswana in order to maintain hopes of progressing to the next round.
Reacting to the pledge, Lahri was quoted on Botswana Football Association Facebook page: “Lucara Botswana is pleased to announce a P200 000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Pula) incentive to the Botswana Women’s National Team, The Mares who are currently competing at the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.
“The Mares made the country proud by qualifying for WAFCON 2022 and are currently making great strides in Morocco; it is in recognition of this sterling effort that we at Lucara Botswana continue to support The Mares and are pledging Two Hundred Thousand Pula as an incentive to motivate them to keep reaching for greater heights and make history.
“Lucara Botswana sponsored The Mares with P 300 000.00 (Three hundred thousand Pula) during their qualification games, a gesture we believe spurred them to eventually qualify for their maiden AWCON.”
Lahri added, “Lucara Botswana subscribes to 10 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and these goals essentially allow us to satisfy our mandate which is to meaningfully impact and contribute towards building a greater, self-sustaining Botswana.
“To the Mares, Keep Flying the Blue Black and White Flag high, the nation is behind you.”
