Hosts Russia shocked Spain and indeed the world by knocking Spain out of the tournament. In a keenly contested match which ended 1:1 after regulation and additional time, the game went into a penalty shootout which saw Russia winning 4:3

Spain had taken the lead in the 12th minute through an own goal conceded by Sergei Ignashevich. They however leveled up from a penalty which was converted by Dzyuba.
After full time and additional time, Spain lost on penalties after Koke and Iago Aspas both missed their shots. Russia scored the four shots so there was no need to take the fifth.
Russia will now take on the winner between Denmark and Croatia.
