A member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu representing Eti-Osa constituency 02 on Thursday seek government intervention to control Nigeria’s increased population.
Yishawu made this known in a statement issued in commemoration of the 2019 World Population Day.
It would be recalled that the World Population Day is observed annually on July 11.
Yishawu who is the ad-hoc Committee Chairman on Budget and Economic Planning maintained that government must look for ways to control over population and address problems associated with it.
According to a 2018 study, nine countries — India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and the United States — will make up more than half the projected growth of the global population between now and 2050.
He said that overpopulation can contribute to such social and environmental problems as global warming, resource depletion, pollution, overcrowding, malnutrition, gender inequality and the spread of deadly disease.
The lawmaker stressed that the world population day seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, with the focus this year being on calling global Attention to reproductive health and gender equality as essential components for achieving sustainable development.
He appealed to Nigerian women to control birth rate in order to enjoy healthy living.
This international day is occasion to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.
