Sack Service Chiefs Like You Did to APC NWC- Afenifere to President Buhari

Afenifere, Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation in Nigeria has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to act swiftly in addressing the leadership issues in the security apparatus of the country like he did in his political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

President Buhari had last week made recommendations to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling APC on resolution of its leadership crisis at its emergency meeting. The NEC adopted the recommendations of the president to dissolve the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and setup a caretaker committee headed by executive Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Bun.

Spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin while condemning the spike of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly killings, rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and acts of terrorism by Boko Haram tasked the president to tackle the issues of insecurity headlong and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Odumakin bemoaned the prolonged tenure of the heads of security agencies given their inability to arrest the security menace bedeviling the country.  He wondered while they will be retained even when the president had at some point admitted their under-performance.

“It is clear that we have lost the war against Boko Haram insurgents even though the Federal Government has made so much propaganda about their exploits against Boko Haram. On a daily basis, it is becoming clearer that Boko Haram is on top of us.

“We need to get back to the drawing board, to devise strategies to contain these criminals; otherwise, Nigeria may go under with these insurgents.

The body asked the president to wield the stick by relieving the service chiefs of the jobs, instead of merely cautioning them. It said the best penalty for ineptitude is sack, since the president had admitted to them that the best of the service chiefs was not enough.

“That was a totally unexpected decision. For those who have failed us in the last five years, who are not able to contain insurgency – and the only thing the president could do was to warn them that he was not satisfied with their performance without kicking them out of office, appointing fresh hands, and boosting morale in the armed forces is unacceptable.

“There are young officers who have been demoralised because these service chiefs should have gone long ago and other people would have risen in their place.

“By leaving them when they are not performing, you are killing morale.

“Within your political party, how many months has the crisis taken, yet you dissolved the NWC, put a caretaker committee. Why can’t you rejig the security architecture like that?”
