Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has urged US President Donald Trump to concede defeat, saying that his ambition is not worth the blood of any American citizen.
The American leader has maintained his stance on not conceding defeat after the elections held last year.
Jonathan’s call came a just a day after pro-Trump supporters stormed the venue of the joint congress proceeding to assess Joe Biden’s victory.
He said, it is never too late to reject the venom and allow the wish of the people for the sake of peace.
Hundreds of Republicans invade the US Capitol on Wednesday when lawmakers were certifying the outcome of the recent presidential election in which Trump lost to Biden.
Inspired by Trump’s insistence that the poll was rigged, the protesters disrupted the proceedings in the chaos that led to the loss of four lives while scores were injured.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Jonathan who conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari even before the declaration of Buhari as the winner of the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria, urged the actors to eschew violence.
He said, “I have repeatedly said nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen, in any part of the world. Absolutely nobody.
“Again, I reiterate that it is better to lose power at the cost of gaining peace, than to gain power at the price of losing the peace. As a leader, one must not just look unto one’s own interest, but the interest and the good of society. It is never too late to reject the venom and inject the serum of peace.
“It is necessary to state that the highest purpose of leadership is to bring people together, even those that do not share in your philosophy. And you do not need an office to do that.
He added that amid the turmoil in the US, all that is needed to achieve the height of leadership is conscience, noting: “Let us be men of conscience at this hour.”
