The National Assembly has resolved to exercise its powers to impeach the president if the 10 demands they are presenting are not met by the Executive. The resolution was announced today June 5 2018 after a 4-hour long joint session of the upper and lower houses held behind closed doors.
The 10 demands made by the legislators are as follows:
1. A clear order to the security agencies in the country to immediately put a stop to the killing of innocent Nigerians.
2. The use of the Police by the Executive to harass its perceived enemies and political opponents.
3. A strict adherence to the rule of law by the executive.
4. The President taking responsibility for actions taken by those he appointed.
5. Sincerity in the fight against corruption.
6. The protection of the sanctity of the National Assembly and ensuring that the investigation regarding those who invaded its chambers and made away with the mace must be thoroughly carried out and brought to a logical conclusion.
7. The National Assembly will work with the ECOWAS parliament, EU, UN, Civil Society Organization to save the country’s democracy.
8. Curtailing of the growing rate of unemployment.
9. A vote of no confidence must be passed on the IGP.
10. A vote of confidence must be passed on the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara.
The National Assembly has said that should these demands not be met, then it will take steps to impeach the President. It adjourned plenary indefinitely after the joint session.
