Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has alleged that there are grand plans by some individuals who do not have the interest of the southeast at heart to incite war in the zone.

Umahi who spoke during an interactive session with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily claimed bandits were perpetrating crimes in the South-East zone of the country disguised as members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

Despite not giving the names or identities of the perpetrators, the governor warned that South-East governors would not condone what he described as illegality to suffice in the region.

He said, “The problem of this country is that people will leave their problems and make your problem their problem. But what some of these people are doing is to incite the southeast into war and step aside, and we are not going to buy into that; we are not going to be deceived again.

“Whether it inspires confidence or not, it does not matter to me. What matters to me is that our people will be satisfied with our efforts in protecting their lives and property. People must be cautious and know that there are grand plans by people who have no interest in the southeast, to incite them into war and we are wiser than that.”

According to Governor Umahi, the regional security outfit, Ebube Agu, recently launched by the Southeast governors, was not formed in a hurry.

He stressed that Ebububeagu remains the only recognised security outfit in the region.

He noted that he and his other colleagues from Enugu, Abia, Anambra, and Imo would combat insecurity within the dictates of the law.

While blaming some politicians for the insecurity in the region, he said: “Ebube Agu is to protect the lives of everyone in the South-East.”

The South-East zone has been embroiled in violent attacks from unknown gunmen who assail residents, police formations and prisons, freeing thousands of inmates.

This prompted the governors of the region to recently announce the formation of a security outfit to fight the rising spate of crimes along with the security agencies.
