The Provost of the Lagos State College of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing Igan.do, Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga has urged Students Midwives to be proactive during intensive and clinical training because they play a vital role in quality healthcare services.

Orenuga stated this in her address during the Capping and Strapping ceremony of Students Midwives Set of 2019, adding that Nurses devote their lives caring for others, especially those who are not strong enough to care for themselves and generally meeting the everyday essential health needs of the people.

In her words “The Profession is essential to all health care systems around the world as Midwives play significant roles in sustaining humanity. Nurses are the first contact in the communities and, as such, need to be trained using the global standard in order for them to hold their head high in whatever environment they find themselves”.

While enjoining the students to be of good behaviour and uphold the professional ethics of Nursing as regards confidentiality in dealing with patients, Orenuga implored them not to leave the country after graduation but join hands with other patriotic Nigerians to make the difference in the healthcare system.

The Head of Department, Midwifery, Ms. Taiwo Olugbade stressed that Capping and Strapping ceremony is a tradition that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has upheld in all Schools of Nursing which is a pre-requisite for registration of students for Basic Midwifery Programme (BMP).

She explained that the goal of Midwifery Programme is to produce competent Midwives who are core Professionals in Maternal and Child Mortality reduction and who can function at all levels of healthcare delivery system in Nigeria and beyond.

In the same vein, the Head of Department of Nursing, Mrs. Olayinka Owolabi advised the Student Midwives not to follow the crowd but to stay focused and not lose concentration as well as give necessary support to the government to effect the needed change in the healthcare system of the Atate and country.
