Badagry Expressway : Lagos Govt Commences Demolition of Shanties

The Lagos State government taskforce on Tuesday commenced the demolition of shanties along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway after the expiration of 7-days ultimatum issued to the traders. The Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Salaam, who led the cleanup team in the company of the Chairman, Lagos Task Force CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi and others, explained that the exercise was in line with the Executive Order of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on zero tolerance for traffic gridlocks and indiscriminate dumping of refuse. Lagos Task Force Orders Removal of Illegal Structures, Kiosks on Badagry Expressway

The operatives of the Lagos State Task Force Lagos State Taskforce on Wednesday ordered the removal of all illegal structures, Kiosks and the end to commercial activities along Badagry Expressway within seven days. Task Force chairman, CSP Ola Yinka Egbeyemi disclosed this while addressing owners of these illegal structures and the traders at different at the expressway, warned them to immediately vacate all road setbacks and walkways within the stipulated date to avoid the wrath of law. Residents and motorist in Lagos have commended the State Government for proposing a "touch and go" electronic payment system that will allow motorists pass quickly at the toll plaza of Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge. It would be recalled that the  State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday announced that the mode of toll collection at the bridge would completely go electronic by October this year, saying that the development was part of efforts to ensure free flow of traffic within the axis. Nigeria: Court Rules that FRSC Can No Longer Fine Motorists

A federal high court in Lagos has declared void powers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to impose fines on motorists for traffic offences. John Tsoho, a judge, held that the commission could not turn itself into a court of law by punishing those who commit traffic offences. Tope Alabi, a lawyer, had approached the court to declare that only a court of competent jurisdiction could pronounce a person guilty under section 10 (4) and 28 (2) of the FRSC Act 2007. Other defendant in the suit was the attorney-general of the federation.
