The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday, said he had directed a conditional lifting of the ban placed on the operations of the microblogging site, Twitter, in Nigeria in June. Buhari disclosed this in his nationwide broadcast to Nigerians to mark the nation’s 61st independence. Nigerians Without NIN Won’t Get Passports, Driving Licence – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission says the October 31 deadline for linking their National Identity Numbers with their Subscriber Identity Modules remains sacrosanct. It also said that Nigerians without NIN would soon be denied the opportunity of acquiring driving licences and passports. Twitter Suspension: Lai Mohammed Says 7 Of FG’s 10 Requests Have Been Met

Nigeria expects to lift its ban on Twitter before the end of the year, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, told Reuters on Thursday, adding that the government was awaiting a response on three final requests made of the social media platform. Mohammed said the government had reached agreements on seven of 10 requests made to Twitter but was waiting for the company’s response on final issues, including setting up a local office, paying tax locally and cooperating with the government to regulate content and harmful tweets. “We certainly want to put this behind us before the end of the year,” Mohammed said. Twitter Ban: SERAP Sues FG, Lai Mohammed Over Directive to Broadcasters

Following a directive to all TV and radio stations not to use Twitter, and to delete their accounts, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has filed a lawsuit soliciting for an order from the Federal High Court Abuja to stop the Federal Government and the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Muhammed from using “patently unlawful directive” as a pretext to harass, intimidate, suspend or impose criminal punishment on journalists and broadcast stations simply for using social media platforms.
