Nigeria Better With Conditions Met, Keyamo Returns To Twitter

Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, says Nigeria is better off with all its conditions agreed by microblogging platform, Twitter. He stated this in his first tweet on Thursday after the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, lifted the suspension on Twitter after over seven months. “For those who prioritised politics over patriotism and exhibited disingenuous righteousness on Twitter suspension, they can now see that with all the FG conditions to which Twitter agreed, Nigeria is eventually better off for it. Nigerians can now access their Twitter accounts without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Announcing its official return via its Twitter Public Policy account, the social media giant assured the Nigerian government that it is committed to driving civic participation. Twitter has withheld a tweet by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for copyright violation. On March 8, the vice-president posted a video in commemoration of International Women’s Day. Beyonce’s song ‘Run the World’ was used as the video’s audio. The Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, has stated that in order to secure Nigeria in the next few years, Nigerians should present and verify their National Identity Number even before using a restaurant. Pantami explained why his ministry insisted on the mandatory use of the NIN in spite of over 44 petitions written against the policy and several court cases in the country. NCC Disqualifies Nigerians Below 18 From Owning SIM

The Nigerian Communications Commission has disqualified anyone below the age of 18 from registering and owning a Subscriber Identity Module in Nigeria. This is according to the draft copy of the modified Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations published on the commission’s website. In the modified regulations, NCC limited telecoms subscribers to only include anyone above the age of 18. “‘Subscriber’ means a person not below the age of 18 years who subscribes to communications services by purchasing a subscription medium or entering into a subscription contract with a licensee.” The Licensee refers to ‘a provider of communications services that utilises a subscription medium in the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. The Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) has criticised a declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari that the ban on the operations of Twitter in the country would be lifted if certain conditions were met by the American company.
