The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 0-1 to the Copper Queens of Zambia in the third-place match of the WAFCON 2022 on Friday in Morocco. The Zambian side claimed the Bronze medal courtesy of an own goal by Chiamaka Nnadozie in the first half of the encounter. The medal marked Zambia’s first ever medal. The Falcons had only finished fourth at the WAFCON in the 2012 edition. Zambia got their goal in the 29 minutes when Evarine Katongo’s long range shot came off Nnadozie after it initially hit the post and deflected into the net. Coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Randy Waldrum, has assured that his team will be equal to the task in their third-place match against Zambia in the ongoing WAFCON 2022 on Friday. The Falcons who missed out on their quest to win a tenth African Women’s Cup of Nations after losing narrowly to hosts, Morocco will take on Zambia at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca aiming to secure a third-place finish. The Nigerian side will be without the trio of Onome Ebi, Halimat Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade for the game. Recall that Ebi picked up a hamstring injury in the semi-final defeat to Morocco and is expected to be out for about six weeks. Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, has lauded the resilience and strength of character shown by the Super Falcons of Nigeria as they bowed out in the semi-finals of the WAFCON 2022 against Morocco. The Falcons took the game to penalties despite having two players sent off, losing 5-4 on penalties to the hosts.
