Implementation of New Electricity Tariff to Resume Next Week

Special adviser to the president on infrastrure, Ahmed Zakari has said that electricity distribution companies (DiscCos) will resume implementation of the new electricity tariff next week. A news service-based reflective tariff (SRT) structure was implemented on September 1 by the DisCos after approval by President Muhammadu Buhari. The new tariff was halted after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) kicked against the hike. The organised labour called for a nationwide strike to protest the new electricity tariff and the hike in petrol pump price. However, the strike was suspended at the eleventh hour after the organised labour reached an agreement with the federal government to suspend the implementation of the new tariff pending the findings of...

FG Approves Extension of New Electricity Tariffs Suspension by One Week

The Federal Government and the organised labour yesterday agreed to extend the suspension of the new electricity tariffs by one week. The decision was reached on Sunday during a meeting between the FG team and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. Recall that the government had on September 28 postponed the implementation of the new tariffs by two weeks to its review by the technical committee after a meeting with organised labour, which kicked against the spike in petroleum and electricity prices. The FG team led by the Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha in a meeting with organised labour at the Presidential Villa banquet hall also agreed to distribute one million meters to reduce the metering gap in the country. The ...

Tariff Hike Suspension: We Are Yet to be Informed – Discos

Following the agreement between the organised labour and Federal Government on suspension of electricity tariff hike for two weeks, power distribution companies on Monday said they are yet to receive official directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on the suspension. Investigation shows the discos are confused on the implication of the agreement between FG and labour unions as regards the suspension of the spike in electricity tariff. Executives of power distribution companies on Monday said they were expecting the NERC to inform them of a new tariff plan to be utilised within the two weeks as agreed by FG and organised labour pending substantive agreement. Reports say even though the Discos said they would require three to four days to change their bi...

Nigeria: Exposing Lai Mohammed’s Lies On Electricity Tariff Hike by Reno Omokri

My attention has been drawn to comments by General Muhammadu Buhari’s aptly named Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, to the effect that the recent 300% increase in power tariffs is the fault of the Jonathan administration. Mr Mohammed’s exact words were as follows: “Before we came in, the power sector had been privatised by the previous administration, but the people they sold to them are incompetent. When we assumed power, we met the mess. Apart from the fact that the Distribution Companies (Discos), could not meter the people, they also could not pay for the electricity generated by the Generation Companies (Gencos), from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Companies.” Not only are these statements false, they also expose Lai Mohammed’s, and the Buhari administration’s, sh...

According to a statement signed by the General Secretary of Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), Comrade Nnamdi Ajibo, Okonkwo’s reinstatement followed review of petitions and due investigations by the Ministers of Power and Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN). According to the statement which reads in part: “Recall the illegal, malice and impunity-driven action of premature retirement of our President  General, Engr.
