Nigeria Better With Conditions Met, Keyamo Returns To Twitter

Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, says Nigeria is better off with all its conditions agreed by microblogging platform, Twitter. He stated this in his first tweet on Thursday after the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, lifted the suspension on Twitter after over seven months. “For those who prioritised politics over patriotism and exhibited disingenuous righteousness on Twitter suspension, they can now see that with all the FG conditions to which Twitter agreed, Nigeria is eventually better off for it. Nigerians can now access their Twitter accounts without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Announcing its official return via its Twitter Public Policy account, the social media giant assured the Nigerian government that it is committed to driving civic participation. Twitter Has Agreed To All Conditions Given By Buhari Government – Keyamo

The minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo has said the social media giant, Twitter has agreed to all the conditions given to it by the Nigerian government. The Buhari-led administration had in June suspended the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, citing the "persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence." Buhari, however, set up a team to engage with Twitter over a ban that has been in effect since June 4, though many Nigerians have been bypassing the ban by using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). NCC Disqualifies Nigerians Below 18 From Owning SIM

The Nigerian Communications Commission has disqualified anyone below the age of 18 from registering and owning a Subscriber Identity Module in Nigeria. This is according to the draft copy of the modified Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations published on the commission’s website. In the modified regulations, NCC limited telecoms subscribers to only include anyone above the age of 18. “‘Subscriber’ means a person not below the age of 18 years who subscribes to communications services by purchasing a subscription medium or entering into a subscription contract with a licensee.” The Licensee refers to ‘a provider of communications services that utilises a subscription medium in the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. The Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) has criticised a declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari that the ban on the operations of Twitter in the country would be lifted if certain conditions were met by the American company. SERAP urged Buhari to withdraw the conditions imposed on the microblogging site pending the final ruling of ECOWAS Court on the case. The Nigerian Communications Commission says the October 31 deadline for linking their National Identity Numbers with their Subscriber Identity Modules remains sacrosanct.
