Senate President Ahmad Lawan has been affirmed by the supreme court as the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial candidate for Yobe north. The apex court in a judgment delivered on Monday allowed the appeal filed by the APC against Bashir Machina’s candidature. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has insisted that the deadline for the use of old naira notes will not be extended. The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, while speaking during a briefing on Friday at the apex bank’s Lagos office, said the CBN, and deposit money banks, DMBs, were making effort to resolve the current challenges with the circulation of the new currency notes. The apex bank recently extended the deadline for the use of the old naira notes from January 31 to February 10. Dr Matshidisco Moeti, the World Health Organisation, WHO, Regional Director for Africa, expressed fear that cancer mortality may rise to about one million deaths per year by 2030 in Africa if urgent actions and interventions are not undertaken. Moeti said that an estimated 1.1 million new cancer cases are recorded every year in Africa, with about 700,000 deaths. She disclosed this in a message to mark the 2023 World Cancer Day.
