Senator Kabiru Marafa who leads a faction of the All Progressive Congress in Zamafara State has asked the national caretaker committee chairman of the APC, Governor Mai Mala Buni to either conduct a national convention of the party in December or risk being kicked out from office.
Governor Buni was appointed head of the caretaker committee in June, 2020 following the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole led National Working Committee (NWC) by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The caretaker committee was tasked with the reconciliation of aggrieved members of the party and to conduct a national convention to elect leaders of the party within a period of six months.
Marafa in a chat with members of the press in Abuja, on Sunday asked the caretaker committee chairman not to overstay his welcome.
“Many of us are aware that your appointment is unconstitutional, because Section 17 (iv) of our party’s constitution is very clear.
“Be informed that any action you take outside your primary mandate of organising a convention that will usher in a new set of executives will be null, void and of no effect whatsoever. You have up to December, to do the needful or we chase you out,” he said.
The national caretaker committee who appeared to react to the development in a statement issued on Sunday said that the committee would not organize a convention without a united front.
The statement signed by Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena was titled, “APC: Governor Buni-Led Caretaker Committee Focused on Party Unity, Reconciliation.”
Nabena said, “The Governor Mai Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee is focused on achieving and sustaining true and lasting unity, peace and reconciliation across party ranks and ahead of the planned national convention of the party.”
