Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, revealed that his administration inherited substantial debt from the previous government led by Nyesom Wike. The disclosure, made on Tuesday, highlighted the challenges faced by Fubara’s administration in settling outstanding payments to contractors who executed projects under Wike’s tenure.
According to Governor Fubara, numerous contractors engaged by the previous administration have been demanding their balance payments, amounting to billions of naira. This revelation has intensified the ongoing feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, adding another layer to their already strained relationship.
During his tenure, Nyesom Wike, often referred to as “Mr. Projects,” undertook a plethora of developmental initiatives, including the construction of 12 flyovers, which garnered significant attention and praise. However, Governor Fubara’s statement implies that the financial implications of these projects were not adequately addressed, leading to the accumulation of substantial debts.

The unveiling of these debts coincides with Governor Fubara’s announcement of his administration’s intention to probe the preceding eight-year tenure of Nyesom Wike. This investigative initiative, aimed at scrutinizing the governance practices of the previous administration, underscores the determination of the current government to ensure transparency and accountability in public affairs.
Further emphasizing the financial challenges inherited by his administration, Governor Fubara lamented the persistent demands from contractors seeking payment for completed projects. This issue was addressed during the inauguration ceremony of the reconstructed 10.89km Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Road in the Eleme Local Government Area, where Governor Fubara expressed his concerns publicly.
The ceremony, attended by distinguished guests including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, provided Governor Fubara with a platform to address the pressing issue of outstanding debts while celebrating the commencement of his administration’s first anniversary. Governor Fubara reiterated his commitment to addressing the debt burden responsibly, assuring the public that all contractual obligations would be fulfilled.
In a bid to alleviate concerns regarding the state’s financial status, Governor Fubara clarified that the road project had been fully paid for, dispelling any doubts regarding the government’s fiscal responsibility. He emphasized the significance of such infrastructural developments in supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to improve transportation networks and enhance the quality of life for citizens.
Addressing speculations regarding his administration’s stance towards the Federal Government, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to collaboration and support for national development initiatives. He denounced attempts to sow discord between the state and federal governments, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in achieving common goals.
During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Fubara extended his gratitude to the people of Eleme for their support and cooperation throughout the project’s execution. He also acknowledged the presence of Governor Otti, commending his leadership and dedication to public service.
In his remarks, Governor Otti praised Governor Fubara’s efforts in addressing critical infrastructure needs and urged continued support from the people of Rivers State. He emphasized the importance of servant leadership and pledged his commitment to advancing the welfare of the citizens.
The event culminated with the recognition of Governor Fubara’s contributions to the community, as he was conferred with the traditional title of Emere Ajuri Oneh of Eleme, symbolizing his commitment to peace and development in the region.
