Former Governor of Benue State and Senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, Gabriel Suswam, has launched scathing criticism against the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, claiming it lacks the capacity to improve Nigeria’s economic fortunes. In an interview on Channels Television’s Newsnight program, Suswam articulated his views on the current economic state of the nation and his assessment of the Tinubu-led administration’s policies.
Suswam commenced by reflecting on the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, opining that the “Change” mantra adopted during Buhari’s tenure did not deliver the anticipated positive outcomes. He argued that the economic policies implemented during those eight years laid the groundwork for the country’s current economic predicament. According to Suswam, the policies of the previous administration dismantled the progress made by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during its tenure, leading the nation into economic turmoil.

The senator expressed skepticism regarding the efficacy of the economic strategies pursued by the Tinubu government. He highlighted key policies such as the removal of petrol subsidy, floating of the naira, and the increase in electricity tariffs as indicators of a government lacking in solutions for Nigeria’s economic challenges. Suswam contended that these policies would exacerbate the plight of the Nigerian masses, leading to heightened inflation and increased financial burdens on citizens.
Suswam’s criticism was not limited to the economic sphere; he also addressed the leadership crisis within his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite acknowledging the challenges faced by the PDP, Suswam asserted his confidence in the party’s ability to reclaim its former glory and steer Nigeria toward prosperity. He positioned the PDP as the party best equipped to rescue the nation from its current predicament.
The former Benue State governor’s comments underscore the prevailing sentiment among certain quarters regarding the efficacy of the Tinubu-led administration’s policies and its capacity to address Nigeria’s economic woes.
In response to Suswam’s criticisms, the Tinubu-led administration has yet to issue an official statement. However, the senator’s remarks are sure to elicit a response from a presidency that has not taken any form of criticism well.
