A yet to be identified gunmen invaded and set ablaze the correctional facility in Owerri, the Imo State capital in the early hours of Monday.
The assailants stormed the prison and set free n unconfirmed number of inmates and suspects. There was reported gunshots around the area. Videos of the attack trended on social media showing the facility on fire.
According to a report released by Amnesty International over the weekend, the Owerri Correctional centre had 2,156 inmates against its installed capacity of 548 people.
A video by popular Tweep with the handle @TundeEddnut showed the correctional centre ablaze.
