A Police Inspector in Jos Plateau state has been arrested for cutting off his wife’s wrist. For Mrs. Hauwa Shagari, a mother of three young children, the harrowing ordeal of Saturday, April 27, 2024, is one that she will not soon forget. What began as a day like any other swiftly turned into a nightmare, culminating in her hospitalization and a life-altering injury inflicted by her husband, Ibrahim Shagari, a Police Inspector.
The incident, born from a minor disagreement over finances, has shocked the community, prompting calls for justice for the victim.
Narrating her near-death experience from her hospital bed at the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Mrs. Shagari recounted the events that led to her grievous injury. She described how a seemingly innocuous disagreement with her inebriated husband escalated into a violent confrontation.
“On Saturday, my husband gave me money to cook soup, but he later demanded that I return it. Initially hesitant, I complied, but tensions rose when he returned asking for more money,” Mrs. Shagari explained. “I explained that I had already used the money to prepare food, which seemed to anger him further.”
The situation deteriorated as her husband brandished a machete, threatening her. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, the confrontation turned physical, resulting in Mrs. Shagari’s severe injury.
“I didn’t even know that he had cut my hand until I heard the shouts and saw the blood,” she recounted, her voice trembling with emotion. “My neighbors rushed to help, applying makeshift bandages before rushing me to the hospital.”
The swift response of law enforcement saw Ibrahim Shagari promptly arrested, with an ongoing investigation into the incident, as confirmed by state Police spokesman Alfred Alabo.

Expressing outrage at the heinous act, State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Darfur, along with Olivia Dazyam, Chairperson of the Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, visited Mrs. Shagari in the hospital. Both officials emphasized the gravity of the situation and pledged support for the victim.
The shocking nature of the incident has reverberated throughout the community, raising questions about the conduct of law enforcement officers. Ibrahim Shagari, a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, had been serving in a remote area before returning home.
In a surprising turn, Shagari confessed to the crime during investigation proceedings. Punishments have been recommended and forwarded for review, as Police authorities try to show the public that they are treating the matter.
The case has sparked widespread condemnation, tarnishing the reputation of the police force. The State Commissioner of Police, accompanied by representatives from the Police Officers Wives Association, visited Mrs. Shagari in the hospital, acknowledging the severity of the incident.
As Mrs. Shagari continues her recovery, questions linger about the trauma she endured and the future of her family. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence and the imperative of holding perpetrators accountable.
The community awaits the resolution of this case, hopeful that justice will be served and that Mrs. Shagari’s ordeal will not be in vain.
